Since 1988, OneSight has impacted more than 8.5 million lives across 40 countries and we're leading solutions to bring sustainable access to quality vision care for all. We've also granted more than $7 million to fund optical research and education.
Through our partnership with Luxottica and other industry experts, OneSight engages optical talent from around the world to hand-deliver quality vision care and eyewear to those who need it most. More than 1,000 trained volunteers and doctors travel the globe to staff OneSight Clinics and teach local residents as part of our commitment to transfer skills and build sustainable infrastructures in underserved communities.
Vision Clinics: OneSight delivers full vision exams and new eyewear free of charge to patients during global and regional OneSight Vision Clinics. We work closely with local governments, health departments, school districts and ophthalmic partners to meet the needs of the communities we serve. We partner with local ophthalmologists and other international doctor outreach organizations to perform optical surgery and refer patients in need of medical treatment. By building local partnerships, our charitable clinics can be a gateway to permanent access. Our sustainable programs in The Gambia, China and the U.S. all started with charitable outreach.
Vision Vans: OneSight launched mobile Vision Van Clinics in 1996 to reach students living in remote locations. Each two-to-three day Clinic is staffed by volunteers from Luxottica retail brands, affiliated doctors, vendors and partners. In 15 years of mobile Clinic operations, volunteers have helped more than 190,000 children across North America. In 2011, OneSight launched EyeLeen, a state-of-the-art optical lab on wheels equipped with two eye exam lanes and manufacturing equipment. Children who visit Eyeleen receive their new prescription eyewear on site.
School-Based Vision Care: 80 percent of what children learn is visual. Yet one in four students has an undiagnosed vision problem. Located within a school environment, The OneSight Vision Center at Oyler School is a full-service vision center providing 3,000 students annually with comprehensive eye exams, glasses, fittings and adjustments, medical eye care and vision therapy with an on-site Doctor of Optometry, ophthalmic technician and optician. In the first seven months of operations, the vision center served 1,255 students and 816 needed glasses (65% need rate). OneSight will expand its school-based model to four locations in New York City and California in 2014 and has plans to open 10+ locations by 2016.
Community-Based Vision Care: In April 2013, OneSight established a permanent vision center in The Gambia, a country in West Africa that previously had one optometrist to serve a population of 1.8 million people. Luxottica volunteers have been on the ground with OneSight to help set-up infrastructure, operations and train Gambians in developing permanent local capacity to deliver quality, affordable vision care. Since opening, the Gambian vision center staff has served 2,026 patients. In addition, in a country with a 50% literacy rate, 35 percent of the local population is now aware of the new vision care services available at Farafenni Regional Hospital. Based on success of the pilot location, OneSight is planning to scale the model to eight total vision centers throughout The Gambia, which will provide access to quality vision care for the entire country by 2016.
